Kathleen's Artist Information Statement

MEDIUM: Glass

My love of glass started during my childhood with my fascination of the beautiful stained glass windows in the churches of my hometown.  In 1982, I had the opportunity to learn the technique of making stained glass windows and my journey into the wonderful world of creating beauty with glass began.

Today, I create my own designs for stained glass windows, primarily from my husband’s photography of nature.  I work in copper foil and lead, sometimes combining both in a piece when the design calls for it.  My favorite glasses are Fremont, Youghiogheny, Uroboros, and Bullseye.

Recently, I took another step into the world of glass with kiln work.  I began with the creation of cabochons for jewelry, primarily using Dichroic glass.  In my opinion, Dichroic glass is a must for my jewelry pieces as it adds that distinctive ‘pop’ to a piece.  I have also found that Wasser glass has some wonderful effects when used with Dichroic.  Each piece is unique, one of a kind.

Designing glass jewelry has opened the delicate art of wire wrapping for me, which allows me to create even more distinctive pieces.  For wire wrapping, I use precious metals such as 14k/20 gold filled wire or Argentium silver.  There are times when I find base metals, such as copper or brass, lend themselves to the wire wrap process.

My kiln work also includes home and office décor, such as plates, bowls, votives, and vases.  For the majority of these pieces, I use either Bullseye or Uroboros glass and I sometime employ the use of Dichroic for interest.

I have a B.S. in Computer Science and consider myself a ‘geek’ by day, artist by night and weekends.  I’ve been mentored by a number of wonderful glass artists and I continue to explore the craft on my own.
